Brittany Leigh is a postdoctoral researcher at Vanderbilt University under the advisement of Dr. Seth Bordenstein. Her project is an interdisciplinary study of the three-tiered relationship between host, bacteria and phage in the Drosophila fly system. She is currently studying how prophages control animal biology, particularly through reproductive parasitism of the fly. Translational applications include using this prophage’s behavior in vector control since it also confers resistance to RNA viruses such as Zika and dengue viruses. Additionally, she spends much time in outreach and various education programs to promote science and the exploration of the microbial world to all students.
